In a move aimed at realigning financial priorities, the Scott County School District 2 (SCSD2) Board is selling its 78-acre property on Boatman Road, land initially earmarked for a new high school that, after 26 years, remains undeveloped. With the cost of constructing a new high school now projected at upwards of possibly the $75 million mark, a project of this scale is no longer deemed feasible in the foreseeable future.
The property, currently leased to local farmer Chad Darlage, could soon be listed for sale after the board approved its sale in their November 12 meeting. Superintendent Dr. Marc Slaton recommended the sale to support the operational fund currently running at a deficit. “Selling this land would allow us to invest proceeds directly into our recovery efforts and achieve greater financial stability for our district," Slaton stated.
In addition to refocusing resources, the sale would ensure SCSD2 maximizes its return on the original 1998 investment in the property. Dr. Slaton emphasized that these funds are essential for maintaining current facilities and managing educational and operational costs.
A public hearing was held to address community questions and concerns including the assurance that all net proceeds would support the district's operations as part of the district's broader financial recovery strategy. The board voted unanimously to allow Dr. Slaton to hire a listing agent for the sale of the Boatman Road property.
