In a significant move to address the pressing need for affordable housing the Austin City Council approved seven acres of land on West York Road for the development of 48 single-story duplexes and triplexes.

The $12 million project, spearheaded by Rauch Inc., aims to provide affordable housing options while ensuring high standards for prospective residents. “Affordable housing doesn't mean giving grants to people who do not work - residents will undergo background checks, credit checks, and must have verifiable income,” the company said.

The initiative gained support from Mayor Roger Hawkins and Clerk-Treasurer Chris Fugate, who visited a similar development in Palmyra and reported their satisfaction with its upkeep stating they were “very pleased” at how well-maintained the housing was.

The project will involve local contractors and engineers, promising to boost the local economy while meeting the growing demand for affordable housing.

The council voted 2-1 in favor of the project with Ryan Gabbard opposing saying, “I just don't think it's a good area.” Gabbard explained that the location makes it hard to show off the project.

Council member Trevor McIntosh abstained, and Brandon White was absent.
