A piece of Henryville’s history could be at risk as a zoning request threatens to alter the landscape surrounding the Little Union Pioneer Cemetery. Concerned citizens and preservation advocates are rallying ahead of a crucial Planning Board meeting scheduled for April 9 at 5 p.m.
Little Union Pioneer Cemetery, located on Francke Road, holds historical significance as the original burial site of many of Henryville’s earliest settlers. Over the years, there has been speculation that the cemetery is larger than its current visible footprint, leading to concerns about proposed developments encroaching on unmarked graves.
Four and a half years ago, a local property owner sought to build storage units on land directly in front of the cemetery. Upon being informed of the potential presence of unmarked graves, the developer hired a dowser to investigate. The results revealed numerous unmarked burial sites, leading to the immediate cancellation of the project.
Now, with a new Planning Board in place, the same property owner is seeking a zoning change to allow for residential development in the same location. Preservationists fear that any construction will not only obscure the historic site but also invite potential disturbances to the graves. Blocking the cemetery from public view, they argue, could lead to neglect or even encourage vandalism.
Local cemetery commission members have reached out to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for guidance and are working to contact Planning Board members. However, with limited direct connections, they are urging the public to spread awareness and attend the upcoming meeting.
Community members who wish to support the preservation of Little Union Pioneer Cemetery are encouraged to attend the Planning Board meeting on April 9 and voice their concerns.
