We are fast approaching the Induction Ceremony for the 2025 Salem Hall of Fame. This years ceremony will be held on April 19 with the meet and greet and reception starting at 5:15.
The greetings and Invocation will start at 5:40 with dinner being served at 5:45. The introductions of the nominees will begin at 6:30 with closing remarks from athletic director Hank Weedin at 7:20.
This years nominees are Dr. William (Bill) Chastain who was a three sport star for the Lions in the early 1980’s. Bill graduated with a 4.0 gpa and Valedictorian honors. He was team captain for both football and basketball.
He was the starting QB during his junior and senior campaigns and finished his career with the school record for most yards passing in a game and most touchdown passes in a career. In his basketball career he led the Lions to the MSC championship in his sophomore year. He finished his senior year with a 17ppg scoring average. He was a pole vaulter and long jumper in the spring on the track team.
After high school Bill went on to play basketball at DePauw University.
Stan Colglazier competed in Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track. He was a key figure in the re-emergence of football at Salem. After a 47 year absence, football returned to Salem High School and Stan was a force on both sides of the ball. He helped lead Salem to their first basketball sectional title in 18 years, and was named captain of the basketball team during their sectional run. Stan did not participate at the collegiate level but instead, completed a highly decorated career in the army where he flew 156 missions in Viet Nam.
He survived two helicopter crashes on of which was behind enemy lines. Upon his honorable discharge he had accumulated 6 air medals, and Army Commendation medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.
Paul Schanlaub coached Lions basketball from 1926-1938. During his thirteen season he went 201-107 even though Salem was playing much larger schools. His record of 201 wins would stand for 80 years. His teams amassed 4 sectional titles and one regional championship. Coach Schanlaub also served as the athletic director for many years and was very active in the community.
Carolyn Haag was a three sport athlete from 1932-1935. She competed in Basketball, Volleyball, and Track. Girls sports had just gotten going and most competitions were more intramural competitions. Carolyn would become more active at the collegiate level where female athletes were becoming more prominent. While attending Hanover College she would earn 13 varsity ribbons and 3 substitute awards in 8 different sports. Carolyn eventually returned to Salem in 1958 where she taught PE, Health, and English at the junior high. She retired in 1987.
