Salem High School senior Raelee Cockerill who is serving as the voice of students and has been meeting with the school board shared an update about what is happening at Salem Middle School.

Cockerill said she recently interviewed middle school Principal Kevin Albertson about upcoming events.

Albertson shared that Feb. 5 was the winter guard family performance; Feb 7 the school hosted a choir concert and Feb. 8 there was a Valentine’s Day Dance.

Feb. 26 students will take part in “The Great History Challenge” at 4 p.m. and March 5 there is a Washington DC trip parent meeting.

Cockerill said she asked Albertson why he liked to be the principal at the middle school.

“He told me middle school is a unique time in the life of a student,” Cockerill said. “He said he likes to be part of shaping students’ lives. He said he likes to help guide them for their future plans and likes to be positive and supportive throughout the school.

“He also said its rewarding to see students he has worked with in the past moving on to high school and achieve the goals they set while they were in middle school.”

Cockerill said she loves to see the staff having an impact like the kind Albertson is talking about.

“It’s important for students to have a safe place to come to,” she said. “At Salem I think students have that. I hope to see it continue. Attending these school board meetings has really helped me see how the school corporation is working in that.

“I am glad to be part of it and am glad to see teachers and staff stepping up and making a difference in the lives of the students.”

SCS Superintendent said she expects Cockerill to turn her attention next to Bradie Shrum Elementary School.
