Scott County to host Vietnam Veterans Day celebration honoring local heroes

Scott County is gearing up for a memorable Vietnam Veterans Day celebration on Saturday, March 29, to honor the sacrifices and service of local Vietnam War veterans. Inspired by a successful program in Jefferson County, the event promises to be a heartfelt tribute to those who served.

The program, organized in partnership with the Vietnam War Commemoration and Scott County Veterans Services, will feature several meaningful highlights. Yellow pins commemorating Vietnam Veterans will be distributed, and some veterans will receive the “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans” books. Organizers are also working to secure special guest appearances, including Medal of Honor recipient Sammy Davis, the only living recipient from Indiana, and Major General Lyles, the highest ranking official in the state.

The event is set to take place on the Scottsburg square, weather dependent. An Honor Guard led by the Young Marines will lend a ceremonial touch, while vendor booths from organizations like Mission 22 and VA healthcare will offer resources and support.

Funding for the event is being sources from various channels, including the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs Event Sponsorship Program, which provides $500 per fiscal year for veteran-related events through 501(c)(3) organizations. Local nonprofits are encouraged to participate and apply for these funds to help pay for the event.

The community is invited to join in celebrating and honoring these heroes. Organizers are calling for additional support through donations, volunteerism, and attendance. With special activities, speeches, and opportunities to connect with veterans and their stories, this promises to be an unforgettable event for Scott County.
