The Scottsburg city council approved a motion to reimburse the Electric Department $35,000 for its original purchase of the City Hall property in 1964. Extensive research revealed that the Electric Department used its funds to buy the building and its adjoining parking lot, but records of repayment were never found.
During the recent council meeting, city officials discussed the findings. “The electric department purchased this building for $35,000 in 1964,” explained clerk-treasurer Jan Hardy. “Our research confirmed that electric funds were used for the purchase, but we could not locate any documentation showing that repayment occurred.”
The thorough investigation identified similar past transactions, such as the use of electric funds for the fire department property on Railroad Street. However, in that case, repayment records were clear. “We found documentation showing that repayment was made for the fire department purchase, but nothing for this building.
The historical context drew interest during the meeting. “It's amazing to think this goes back to 1964,” said Mayor Terry Amick.
The funds to repay the Electric Department will come from the purchase of the City Hall building by the county which was finalized last month using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
