HERBERT J. “HERBIE” MAUCK JR., a devoted family man, proud veteran, and outdoors enthusiast, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2025 at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center. He was 76 years old.

Born on February 1, 1949, in Salem, Indiana, Herbie was the son of Herbert Mauck Sr. and Thelma Casey Mauck. He graduated from Salem High School in 1967. Completed HVAC and Heavy Equipment Operator schooling.

Herbie voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army, serving a tour and a half in Vietnam and afterwards in the Army National Guard. His bravery was recognized with three Bronze Stars and several other military honors.

After his military service, Herbie worked for the Henry Vogt in the 1980’s and later for the Clark County Highway Department. Herbie and his wife, Beth, owned and operated Mauck’s General Store in South Boston for 12 years. He also founded Wild Turkey Farms Inc. and retired from the Indiana DNR at Deam Lake.

Herbie loved nothing more than spending time outdoors. He enjoyed riding his Harley, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and exploring the country with Beth. He was also an avid euchre player and loved playing with family and friends. Herbie was a proud Democrat, UAW member and devoted family man, always prioritizing time with his grandchildren, family and friends.

Herbert J. “Herbie” Mauck Jr. will be deeply missed by his loved ones and community. His unwavering commitment to family and country will be remembered for generations to come.

He is survived by his wife: Elizabeth (Lumley) Mauck they were married May 29, 198/7. He is also survived by three children: James Mauck (Betty) of Corydon, Jeffrey Mauck (Michelle) of Borden and Anna Hall (Jerame) of Pekin, two brothers: Marvin E. Mauck (Marion) of Salem, and Dale Mauck (Bernice) of Salem, a sister: Wanda Gale Cook of Bedford, three grandchildren: Ryan Lee (April) of Paoli, Jameson Hall (Maty) of New Albany, and Diesel Mauck of Borden, and three great-grandchildren: Lowen, Tobi and Abner.

Herbert is preceded in death by: a son Wesley Humphrey, a sister: Patricia “Patty” Mauck, and his parents.

Herbie’s family invites you to a celebration of life in his honor on Saturday, March 29 from 1 until 5 p.m. at the 4-H Building at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Salem, which is located at 118 Fair St. Salem, IN 47167.

NAOMI WILLIAMS, 89, Campbellsburg, passed away Sunday, March 9,

2025, in her residence.

Born October 21, 1935 in Corbin, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Trett Sr. and Ollie (Smith) Trett.

She was a former waitress, grocery store clerk and old Smith Cabinet Company employee and was a partner with her husband, farming until her health declined

She was a member of Mt. Tabor Christian Church, loved gardening,

cooking, homemaking and her family and gave much of her time to their care.

On February 17, 1962 she married Edgar E. Williams, who survives.

Also surviving are: 2 Daughters: Debbie (Mark) Medaris of Mitchell and Sherry Williams of Sellersburgl; 1 Brother: Jerry (Carolyn) Trett of Edinburg, Indiana: 2 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and her beloved Yorkie, Zoe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Trett Sr. and Ollie Cauble; 3 brothers: Herman, Raymond Jr. and Larry Trett and 3 Sisters: Mary Ann Richardson, Jean Mahuron and Ethel Bowling.

The services will be private.

JOANNA OOLEY, 86, Sellersburg, Indiana passed away Friday, March

7, 2025, in her residence.

Born November 2, 1938 in Salem, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Flora (Voyles) Sullivan.

She was a homemaker and loved spending time with her grandkids. She was a member of the Daisy Hill United Methodist Church and had been a resident of Washington County for most of her life.

She married Lawrence Ooley, who passed away June 22, 2017.

Survivors include 3 Sons: Mark (Deborah) Ooley of Fisherville, Ky, Joseph Ooley of Borden and Shawn (Cheryl) Ooley of Colorado Springs; 1 Daughter: Tonya Ooley of Sellersburg; 2 Sisters: Sue (Dave) Saylor of Pekin and Delores Neeley of Martinsburg and 4 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: brothers and sisters; Don, Bob, Jack and Tony Sullivan, Wilma Sullivan, Mayetta Kersey, Bonnie Roberts, Jean Holsapple and Mary Emerson.

Funeral Service was Tuesday, March 11 at Dawalt Funeral Home, followed by interment in Crown Hill Cemetery.


MECE “MOOSE” GRIFFITH, 80, Borden, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at his residence. Born on September 15, 1944, he was the son of the late Ova and Laura Griffith.

Mece is survived by a brother, Tony Griffith; and a sister, Zelma “Gere” McCowan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ova and Laura; 2 brothers: Bill Griffith and Arley Griffith; and 3 sisters: Euma Joy Prewitt, Ruth Butt, and Geraldean Hauser.

Cremation was chosen.

LARRY LYNN LANG took hold of the hand of Jesus and crossed over to his Heavenly Home for which he so longed for on Sunday, March 9th, 2025. Larry was born in Ramsey, IN on Saturday, September 11th, 1938, in a one room log cabin, the first child of Archie Lang and Cleatice Turner Lang. His paternal grandparents were Jesse W and Anna (Franks) Lang. His maternal grandparents were Claude C and Clara (Nicholson) Turner.

Larry is survived by his wife, the former Alma Darlene Rudolph. They were married on April 7, 1961, and brought 5 children to their marriage who survive. Teresa Lang-Tsingine (Alvin), Smedley, Indiana; Lisa Lang, Borden Indiana; Kevin Lang (LeiAnn), Pulltight, Indiana; Brian Lang, San Antonio, Texas; Ruth Ann Green (Mark), Pekin, Indiana.

Larry is also survived by his siblings Roger (MaryAnn) Lang, Carole Sue (Fred) Smith, Donald (Joan) Lang, and Rebecca (Dan) Julius. Larry is survived by his dearly loved grandchildren Wesley Lang (Jordan), Conner Green, Emily Lang and Caleb Green.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Rae Etta Wilcher & Phyllis Kay Lang as well as granddaughter, Anna MuLan Lang.

Larry’s life embraced a life of walking daily with Jesus. He was a prayer warrior for all of those he loved and those who he knew that needed prayers. Larry was dedicated to his work with Gideons International in retirement. He also found time to minister to a number of Native American Indian Reservations, work with the local jail ministry and assist with the Angel Tree program.

Larry was a graduate of Pekin High School, Class of 1957. He was involved with the band where he played trombone and was active in the FFA Chapter and also served as FFA Chapter Treasurer.

Larry retired from the MoorMan’s Mfg. Company after 36 years of dedicated service to farmers. His sales area was all of Harrison and parts of Washington and Crawford Counties. He would often tell the story of the .01c paycheck he received and that it cost more to mail it. He, himself, was a farmer since his teen years where he enjoyed raising a variety of animals, including honey bees. In his later years, he was an advocate for organic farming.

Larry enjoyed life, traveling whether it was around the country or just to Harrison County, Europe, and visiting family and friends. Larry was well versed in theology, agriculture, including new farming innovations even though he was no longer farming, and many other topics due to his love for reading.

He was a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, National Society Descendants of American Farmers, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, First Families of Harrison, Clark and Floyd Counties and was a member of the National & Indiana Farmers Organization. Larry believed in giving the give of life, blood. He donated over 10 gallons of blood during his lifetime.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory may be made to his favorite charities: Samaritan’s Purse, Mercy Ship, or Salvation Army.

The family would like to extend our sincere appreciation and thanks to those who helped with Larry’s caregiving, the staff of Hampton Oaks, Stephanie Hickey and Linda Hubbard.

Funeral services were Friday, March 14 at the Love Funeral Home, 14345 Greene St. NE, Palmyra, Indiana, 47164. Larry was laid to await the resurrection morning at the Palmyra Cemetery, Palmyra.


LAURA ELSIE SOWDER, 90, Salem, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2025 in her home.

She was born February 14, 1935 in London, Kentucky, the daughter of Orlando Gray and Louisa Bundy Gray. Mrs. Sowder was retired from Baird Mobile Homes. 

Laura is survived by her son Gary Sowder (Tammi) of Salem, two daughters, Patricia Shepherd (Bruce) of Salem and Sharon Powers of Salem. She is also survived by her brother Estille Gray (Pat) of London, Ky, seven grandchildren: Derek, Jonathan, Natasha, Josh, Jessica, Scottie and Angela, eight grandchildren: Kaylee, Cody, Chaylee, Katherine, Emma, Emari, Kasen and Lilynn, and two great-great grandchildren, Elodie and Harvee and also her great-grand dog Poppy.

She is preceded by her husband Chester Ray, they were married January 23, 1957 and he passed away on January 31, 2015. She is also preceded by her son, Jerry Sowder, her brothers, Robert “Hob” Gray, George Bundy and Fred Gray, her sisters, Phyllis Gray Hampton, Lillie Gray Smith and Nancy Gray Sowder. She is also preceded by two infant siblings, Mary and Larry Gray, and one grandchild.

Services were Monday, March 17 at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial followed at Winslow Cemetery following the funeral service.


JAKE R. BYLER, 39, Salem, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at his residence. 

Born on November 12, 1985, he was the son of Reuben J. Byler and Delilah A. (Schwartz) Byler. 

Jake is survived by his parents, Reuben J. Byler and Delilah A. Byler; his 4 brothers: Reuben R. Byler (Martha), Noah R. Byler (Lydia), John R. Byler (Elizabeth), and William R. Byler (Lovina); his 5 sisters: Delilah D. Schwartz (Joe), Rosie D. Wengerd (Andy), Bertha D. Girod (Ben), Susie D. Girod (Pete), and Annie D. Christner (Reuben); his grandmothers, Clara A. Girod, and Anna R. Schwartz; several aunts and uncles and 45 nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service was Saturday, March 15 at his residence, with burial to follow at Crossroad Amish Cemetery.

Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home was entrusted with funeral care.
